Dates we stayed: March 17 - 24 2007
Here's what we loved most about our stay at the Royal Decameron, and a few tips for those of you lucky enough to be planning a stay at the Royal Decameron Complex!
BEACH
Wonderful beach. Clean, beautiful water, great waves for those who love to boogie board! Beach chairs are harder to grab then the pool chairs.
FOOD and DRINKS
Good food, good selection. We tried the Mexican and Italian restaurants. We really enjoyed the Italian. Note for families with children, to book the Italian you can only go at 6pm or 6:30pm, the 8pm and 8:30pm seatings are intended for Adults only. Making reservations for the specialty restaurants, booking time is 8am for same day reservations, you'll want to get there no later then 7:30am, there is a line. You can book at 3pm for next day reservations, again, be early. You can book the specialty restaurants at the Internet room, or in Lobby 4 (Tropical section).
Thursday night is Mexican night, leave that open to eat the the buffet. Amazing food!!! They bring in a few vendors and have the whole resort in Mexican theme, was great!
For the specialty restaurants, they have a dress code, but its pretty relaxed, nice shorts (not cut offs) and sandals are fine for men.
Great snack bar tucked away in front of building 2 (Is the Steakhouse in the evening), they offer great pizza, burgers, fries, nachos and guacomole!!!
If you're looking for a great bartender, check out Gabriel, he makes awesome drinks! Insulated cups are a must.. you can buy them at the gift shop for $10US, leave your Big Gulps at home... really not necessary.
NIGHTLY SHOWS
Not really our favorite, but they do work hard. The shows were always full, so many people did enjoy them. We did catch the Mexican night, which was good, and a few others, but not really the high point of our vacation.
ROOMS
We were lucky enough to get building 1, ocean front. Great views. Great location! Nice central location, it is the oldest of the buildings, and it does show in the rooms, but still comfortable and clean. Our room did smell pretty musty, but we opened our patio doors every evening and the ocean breeze took that away instantly. Each building has its benefits! Building 3 and 4 are also a very central location. Building 4 has a pool and buffet restaurant, and a bar, Building 5 is behind the others, across a street. Here is where the adults only pool is located, this was our favorite location when it was getting windy on the beach in the afternoon. Building 5 also has a bar and buffet lunch, which is the Jap Jap in the evening. Building 6 is the newest, houses the Italian and Mexican restaurant, also has a great pool and bar, just a little further away from beach area. Still only a short walk. No rooms have mini fridges, but you will get a water bottle each day, these can be filled up at the bar, or you can ask you maid for extra bottles in your room.
LOCATION
Great Location. Be sure to shop the market in Bucerias. Just keep in mind that is does close at 5pm, so unfortunately you will have to go in the heat of the day. Good deals to be had! Also have a few great bars and restaurants if you want to try something a little different then what the resort is offering. We didn't catch a bus into Puerto Vallarta, but the local bus is very cheap. You can also catch a local bus to Punta da Mieta, great beach out past Bucerias, very cheap to get there.. again, we didn't get around to doing this, but heard its a great place to go.
GROUNDS
Beautiful ground and gardens. Very well kept, the buildings are painted bright beautiful colors, very authentic Mexico. I found myself taking pictures of everything because its so colorful and beautiful.
EXTRAS
We took the free kayak tour that the resort offers, we were able to see dolphins, one actually came right under our kayak! This is something you can do on your own as well.
We did the Sierra Madre Tour, was a good tour, we had an awesome tour guide, Luis.. he made it so much more fun! Vallarta Adventures is a great company! Also heard the Canopy Tour was amazing.. but again, ran out of time so we didn't get to try it out.
All around, we had an amazing time! We'd go back next week if we could! It's not the Ritz, don't expect glitz and glam, but if you're looking for a casual/ comfortable resort with great food, staff and lots of activities, I think you'll love this place as much as we did!
