Spent a week at the Luperon Beach Resort in the Dominican Republic Jan 2009. We selected this hotel based on an excellent price, we decided to book since many reviews were good and the price was very affordable!
Overall, we were pleased with the hotel. It was terrific value for the money. After having taken over a dozen trips to all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic and Cuba over the last ten years, I was very happy to spend a week relaxing under the sun at this hotel. Below are a few comments:
ACCOMMODATIONS: We were in Building 17 with a great view of the garden and the sea. The room was clean and the bed was one of the most comfortable I've slept on in this type of resort. Plenty of closet space and the room was large.
FOOD: The buffet was fine
,there was a good selection of meats, seafood, vegetables and pasta. The omelets were delicious in the morning and the Dominican specialties were actually very tasty. Some people complained that there was a lack of variety, which we agreed with, but one travels to a Caribbean all-inclusive resort for the fun and the sun, not the gourmet experience. The beer was always cold, plenty of fruity rum drinks to go around.
BEACH: The beach is large and has plenty of shade, either under the palapas or under the palm trees. It is not a long walking beach, but it is quite wide, allowing for a little privacy under your hut. Swimming is made difficult by the rocky shore, but there is a spot near the beach bar that facilitates it. When the sun shines, it is a great place to spend the day!
ACTIVITIES: We had planned on doing an ATV/Four-Wheeler activity. There are two options: with your tour operator or through the local provider. We chose to buy from our tour operator since the local guy was very unpleasant and tried to gouge us on the exchange rate
TWICE! Several friends took the catamaran tour at $49 USD and had a great time. Others took a tour of Puerto Plata and Isabella and said they were nice days. There are no water sports, other than kayaks and windsurfing. There was also scuba diving available.
CURRENCY: Take US dollars with you as everything is based on that currency. It's much cheaper in the end as well.
ENTERTAINMENT: There is a show every evening at 10pm, and there is often a band playing at the main bar during the evenings. The shows were fine, some better than others
they are nonetheless entertaining.
STAFF: The Luperon Beach staff was nothing but friendly, professional, and fun. If you tip your bartender, you will be treated like a king and queen! One word of warning: there is a group of VIP Club promoters that virtually assault you when you either enter or leave the buffet restaurant trying to sell a Best Hotels loyalty membership. They are extremely aggressive but if you are polite and keep saying No, thanks! they will eventually leave you alone. The vendors on the beach are a little annoying, but if you say "no thanks" a few times, they do leave you alone.
This vacation was all about spending some quality time with my boyfriend, enjoying the sun and the sand, meeting new and interesting people, and relaxing. This resort allowed us to do that.
If you are looking for one of the best value vacations in the DR the Luperon is the place to book.
