Roatan, at 64 kilometers long and just over 3 kilometers wide, is the largest of these islands and boasts the most developed infrastructure with a variety of hotels and resorts to suit almost any budget, a variety of dining options, several bars and clubs and some local shops. Tourists to Roatan will be pleased to discover that English is so widely spoken that many of the local inhabitants do not even speak Spanish.

Roatan is the most well known of the archipelago and is more famous for what is below sea level rather than what is above. Scuba divers and snorkellers have long been coming to this area as it is part of the most complex underwater ecosystems in the world with more species of marine life than most people can name. This area is home to 96% of all marine life creatures found in the Caribbean. With water temperatures ranging from 77 to 82 degrees throught the year and visibility of up to 110 feet, this is a virtual cornucopia of marine pleasure. If you prefer, simply relax on the beautiful beaches or take a day tour to the mainland. For a complete change of place, take a forest tour of the Mayan ruins of Copan.

Not surprisingly, Roatan’s greatest attractions are related to the beach or the water. The island is surrounded by lovely beaches and the world’s second largest coral reef, which actually hugs much of the shoreline.
